From the beginning, in the 1970s, one of the main tasks of the Fondazione Gramsci Emilia-Romagna is to preserve archives and documents that were produced by organizations, associations and the main protagonists of the Italian Left in the 20th century, from parties (Italian Communist Party and Italian Socialist Party) and political organizations in the Region of Emilia-Romagna.
At the beginning the sole purpose of this conservation activity was to preserve the historical records of parties and movements and to value the memory of a political experience, preserving the documents that bear witness to their action. With time, this activity has increasingly related to scientific research and at the same time to the public and private bodies network concerning the protection and conservation of contemporary historical sources by adopting conservation measures and instrument for consultation which are suitable and in tune with the current archival legislation.
The Foundation is part of the public network of regional documentary conservation bodies. It provides consultation services of its archive collections to the public, in agreement with the Istituto per i beni artistici culturali e naturali of the Region of Emilia-Romagna.
The collections preserved in the Foundation are safeguarded by the Soprintendenza archivistica statale and are declared to be of national historical significance.
The Foundation is part of the Una città per gli archivi project – carried out by the Fondazione del Monte of Bologna and Ravenna and the Fondazione Carisbo – which aims to organize and enhance the archives of contemporary Bologna. Furthermore, the Foundation participates to Archivi del Novecento, which is a national network of Institutes for the conservation of 20th century sources with the aim of making their archive’s inventories available online.
The archive materials are available during the library opening hours: 9:30 – 18:30 from Monday to Friday.
The archive collections are preserved in an external storage.
If you want to book material for consultation, please check the inventories on this page and contact us by telephone (051 231377 / 051 223102) or by e-mail (firstname.lastname@example.org).
